Chapter Twelve

When the dishes were washed and put away, Doniphan pulled out a large calendar. Setting it on the kitchen table, he gathered an assortment of markers. “Pick a color, sweetheart. That will be your shade so we tell at a glance what’s going on with each other. My work schedule changes each day, but you can see that I have physical training each afternoon at one.”

“You didn’t go yesterday,” she pointed out.

“I didn’t. You’re important. I needed to see you. Now, I’m just going to take you with me.” He spoke as if the decision had already been made.

Bristling slightly, River pushed back. “I’m not going to do everything you decide!”

“No, you get to make your own decisions. There will be a consequence each time you make the wrong decision. For example, I want you to come today to meet my friends’ companions. You’ll meet one wife, and a couple whose relationship is just forming. Both women are Littles. Not all my squad members have been lucky enough to find their one,” he shared.

“They’re Littles? Really?” she squeaked in disbelief.

“Really. Sound like people you would like to get to know?”

“Are they nice?” she probed.

“Most Littles are wonderful people,” he assured her. “I don’t have any doubt that you will enjoy meeting them. Cricket should be there as well.”

“Cricket is Little?” she asked with that same incredulous squeak.

“You’ll have to discuss that with Cricket personally. Just as I would ask someone to talk to you directly if they had a personal question about you,” Doniphan said lightly.

“When do we go?” Torn between wanting to meet other people living as Littles and being embarrassed for others to know that she must be Little too, River was nervous.

“We’ll go as soon as I put on my running clothes, and we pack some snacks for you. Today’s goal is running endurance. We’ll be at it for a while,” he warned.

How long could a man run? she thought dismissively.

River lagged slightly behind Doniphan as they walked up the stairs to the observation area. A few handsome fit men gathered at the top. Counting, she checked to see if all five men were present. It appeared that there were two men yet to arrive.

“Doniphan! Who is that lovely lady trailing behind you?” a tall red-haired man asked with a smile.

Doniphan slowed to allow her to join him. Looping his free arm around her waist, he whispered, “It’s okay, sweetheart.”

River tried to be brave. Her daddy explained that these men were battle-bonded. They had forged each relationship in sweat and blood, creating a friendship that extended deep into their very essence. They’d all sworn to protect the others. That protection extended to their significant others.

“This beautiful treasure’s name is River,” he introduced her proudly.

“Hi!” She greeted everyone and hoped she didn’t look as nervous as she felt.

One by one, the soldiers greeted her and introduced themselves. She’d seen all of them at the Harbor and waited on them frequently. They had always been polite and friendly then.
